The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood preK-3 program is designed for individuals seeking initial licensure to teach young children from pre-kindergarten through third grade. This program prepares candidates to create inclusive, developmentally appropriate, and engaging learning environments that address the diverse needs of all students, including English learners, children with special needs, and those from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

Throughout the program, candidates explore foundational theories in child development, culturally responsive teaching, and inclusive education, with an emphasis on fostering social-emotional, cognitive, physical, and language development in young children. Coursework covers best practices in early literacy, mathematics, and creative arts, integrating evidence-based strategies to support holistic development. Candidates are also trained to engage families and communities in the learning process, recognizing their role in supporting children’s educational journeys.

The program culminates in a comprehensive student teaching experience, where candidates apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world classroom setting under the guidance of experienced mentors. This hands-on experience enables candidates to refine their teaching practices, develop classroom management skills, and demonstrate their commitment to fostering equitable, inclusive, and engaging early learning environments.

Graduates of the MAT Early Childhood Integrated preK-3 program are well-prepared to meet state licensure requirements and are equipped to make a positive impact on young learners, helping them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in diverse educational settings.
