Music Education, Vocal License, B.M.

The Vocal Licensure Track within the Major in Music Education provides the appropriate credential for teaching elementary classroom music, middle and high school general music, choral music at all lees, piano, and theory. Students pursuing this licensure track should choose voice, keyboard, or guitar as their principal applied area. Scroll to the bottom of this web page to see additional hours required to add Instrumental Licensure.

BELL Core Requirements: 38 Hours (minimum)


Technical Requirements:


Technical Requirements are courses identified by the program as required courses and will count in the BELL Core Requirements.

Major Core Requirements: 18 Hours


Class Piano: 4 Hours


Note: This requirement waived and four (4) hours added to general electives for piano/keyboard principals only. 

Ensembles: 6 Hours

All music majors must enroll in at least one for-credit ensemble during each semester of study, even if minimum degree requirements for ensembles have been met. 

 

Music Education Major: 39-43 Hours


Music Education Majors must select either Traditional Track or Integrative Track. 

Applied Principal: 14 Hours


Traditional Track:


  • MPA 2201 Applied Classical Lessons 2 hours (4 semesters)
  • MPA 4201 Applied Classical Lessons 2 hours (3 semesters)
  • MPR 3001 Half Recital 0 hours

 

OR

Integrative Track:


  • MPA 2201 Applied Classical Lessons 2 Hours (4 semesters)
  • MPA 4101 Applied Classical Lessons 1 Hours (3 semesters)
  • MPA 4102 Applied Commercial Lessons 1 Hours (3 semesters)
  • MSM 4002 Seminar: Commercial Voice 0 Hours (3 semesters)
  • MPR 3002 Half Recital 0 hours

Ensembles: 1 Hours

Guitar principals add: 4 Hours

Music Education Professional Studies: 30 Hours


General Electives: 5 Hours (minimum)


Guitar principals have 4 additional elective hours (minimum)

Total Required for the Program: 132 Hours


A professional semester of student teaching is required of all Music Education students seeking recommendation for a teaching license. This semester includes a full 16 weeks of student teaching, divided into equal segments of elementary/middle school and secondary practicum with either a vocal or instrumental emphasis. Students must have completed all other required degree coursework prior to student teaching and may not be enrolled in any coursework except MUE 4400 Student Teaching in Music , and MUG 4015 Senior Capstone in Music  while student teaching. Any exception to this policy must be approved by the Music Education faculty. Prerequisites to the Professional Semester are: (a) Completion of Piano Proficiency Exam, (b) Completion of all required Music Education Methods courses, and (c) Formal application and admission to the Music Teacher Education Program and to Student Teaching in Music.

Music Education, K-12 Instrumental License Optional Add-On



The K-12 Instrumental License may be added to the Vocal License by including these additional course requirements.
