The Family Medicine Clerkship is a longitudinal, outpatient-focused experience spanning three semesters, designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of primary care. This clerkship partners with family medicine clinics across the Nashville footprint, allowing students to train in diverse community settings. Students will develop continuity relationships with both preceptors and patients, fostering a deeper appreciation for long-term, patient-centered care.

Throughout the clerkship, students will refine their skills in history-taking, physical examination, preventive care, chronic disease management, and acute care in the outpatient setting. They will also gain experience in patient counseling, behavioral health integration, and team-based primary care.

By the end of the rotation, students will demonstrate competency in managing common outpatient conditions, applying evidence-based medicine, and coordinating care across specialties. This extended exposure to outpatient medicine ensures students develop strong clinical reasoning, patient advocacy skills, and an appreciation for the role of primary care physicians in the healthcare system.
