LAW 6560 Practical Issues in Medical Legal Partnerships

Corequisites: All students will be required to register for a field placement in an approved field placement site along with participation in this course.

The course will be a 2 credit practicum focused on preparing students for providing legal services to clients screened and referred by medical professionals for health harming legal needs. The type of information that will be covered will be advanced care planning, powers of attorney for health care, powers of attorney for finances, landlord-tenant issues, expungement, documentation/id/ immigration issues (primarily screening), health insurance/health care access issues, social security/disability issues, Medicare/Medicaid eligibility issues, and other issues that frequently arise in the context of a medical appointment. This will also involve preparation of educational materials and screening tools to be used by nursing students to identify health harming legal needs and mock interviews with clients regarding identification of legal needs. All students will be required to register for a field placement in an approved field placement site along with participation in this course.
