Return to: College of Liberal Arts and Social Science - School of Social Sciences
The degree program in History and Public Policy prepares students for lives and careers dedicated to discerning the public good, particularly as it pertains to policy in public institutions. Students will study both the theory and practice of public policy from a wide array of global, historical perspectives, acquiring qualitative skills with some exposure to quantitative reasoning. Being a history degree, this course of study has the liberal arts at its core, but combines that focus with exposure to professional programs specifically dedicated to public work. History and Public Policy students seek to understand change across time, exploring how public policy emerged in different contexts, while considering how it came to be what it is today. Students will learn how structures of power and influence work in the competition for resources among different, diverse populations enmeshed in public institutions. In studying these processes, students will consider both the human beings who make decisions and those who are the recipients of public resources, including the overlapping, complex relationships between the two.
