BELL Core Requirements: 53 Hours (minimum)


Major Requirements: 37-39 Hours


(Major Core plus one Concentration)

Literature Concentration: 24 Hours


Students pursuing the English Major, Literature Emphasis may combine this with any minor except Literature.

Distribution requirements:

  • At least two courses in this concentration must be comprised of literature composed primarily before 1800 (ENL 2110, 2310, 2330, 3300, 3310, 3520, 3540, 3600, 3620, 3660, 3910, 6620)
  • At least one course in this concentration must be comprised of non-western literature (ENL 2330, 2340, 3800, 4370)

Creative Writing Concentration: 24 Hours


Students pursuing the English Major, Creative Writing Concentration may combine this with any minor except Creative Writing.

Two from the following: 6 Hours


English Electives: 12 Hours


  • Three additional 3/4000-level electives, one of which must be ENL and another of which may be ENL; a fourth elective at the 2000-level or above.  

Writing and Rhetoric Concentration: 24 Hours


Students pursuing the English Major, Writing and Rhetoric Concentration may combine this with any minor except Writing and Rhetoric.

English Electives: 12 Hours


  • Three additional 3/4000-level electives, one of which must be ENW and another of which may be ENW; a fourth elective at the 2000-level or above.  

English for Secondary Education Concentration: 24 Hours


Students pursuing the English Major, English for Secondary Education Concentration may combine this with any minor except English for Secondary Education.

English Electives: 6 Hours


  • Two additional 3/4000-level electives, one of which may be ENL: 6 Hours

Minor Requirements: 18 Hours


General Electives: 23 Hours (minimum)


Total Required for the Program: 128 Hours
