The development of the Church as a corporation, the importance of missionary activity in the barbarian conversions, the maintenance of classical intellectual traditions, the rise of the national monarchies, the revival of towns and trade, the changing status of women, the origins of European dissent and heresy, the impact of famine, and the transformative role of epidemic disease are a few of the topics examined in depth.
