Sport Administration

  
  • SAM 6070 Financial Aspects of Sport


    3 Hours

    This course contains an overview of basic financial concepts, tools and techniques used by sport administrators and emphasizes financial analysis, capital structuring & budgeting, short and long-term financing, and financial troubleshooting. Additionally, this course examines the fundamental tools and strategies necessary to raise funds within various segments of the sport industry. Both annual and major giving will be emphasized, as well as studying their role within the overall scope of a college athletic department, professional sport organization, or other sport industry segments.
  
  • SAM 6250 Advertising and Sponsorship in Sport


    3 Hours

    This course examines the evolution of advertising, sponsorship, and licensing in the sport industry. Emphasis will also be placed on current trends in the industry, sales negotiations, and sponsorship proposals.
  
  • SAM 6260 Sport Event Management & Planning


    3 Hours

    This course is designed to introduce students to principles and practices of planning, funding, operating, and evaluating events within the sport industry. This course includes actual hands on involvement with event planning and management.
  
  • SAM 6270 Marketing and Public Relations in Sport


    3 Hours

    This course focuses on current factors and issues related to sport marketing and public relations. Emphasis will be placed on creating and evaluating a marketing plan and evaluating the relationships between sport organizations and a wide variety of consumers.
  
  • SAM 6280 Organizational Behavior and Leadership in Sport


    3 Hours

    This course will examine the relationships between sport organizations and a wide variety of consumers. Fundamental programs will be designed to enhance the relationship between the consumer and sport organizations.
  
  • SAM 6290 Fundraising in Sport


    3 Hours

    This course examines the fundamental tools and strategies necessary to raise funds within various segments of the sport industry. Both annual and major giving will be emphasized, as well as studying their role within the overall scope of a college athletic department, professional sport organization, or other industry segment.
  
  • SAM 6310 Seminar in Sport Administration


    3 Hours

    This course offers an introduction to various aspects of sport administration. Responsibilities of administrators within intercollegiate athletics, professional sports, and private industry will be discussed.
  
  • SAM 6320 Governance in Sport


    3 Hours

    This course will provide a thorough study of the governing structure, rules and legislative process within the NCAA. While intercollegiate athletics is the main focus of the course, study of other sport governing bodies may also be included.
  
  • SAM 6360 Internship in Sport Administration


    1-6 Hours

    Prerequisites: Approval of internship coordinator.

    This course will provide an opportunity for students to gain practical administrative experience in the sport industry.
  
  • SAM 6400 Sport Journalism


    3 Hours

    This course will overview the aspects of journalism as each impacts sport administration. Students will gain valuable experience in news and profile writing, interviewing, writing for the electronic audience/internet, and learning the fundamentals of responding to the media (newspaper, television, and radio). Skills useful in media relations for athletic teams will be included, along with editing experience.
  
  • SAM 6990 Special Topics in Sport Administration


    1-3 Hours

    This course will allow students to study unique topics in the field of Sport Administration.

Science

  
  • SCI 5050 Science for Elementary Education


    3 Hours

    This graduate course emphasizes basic concepts in science, with application to elementary school science and suggestions for teaching these concepts. For elementary teacher licensure only. (Approximately 20 hours of practicum required, which may be within the scheduled time of the class.)

Social Entrepreneurship

  
  • SET 5150 Grant Writing


    3 Hours

    The course will provide students with practical skills of preparing competitive grant proposals for submission to private foundations, corporations, Local Education Associations, and other funding sources.  Students will apply skills learned by working directly with a local nonprofit to develop a grant request for submission to one of the funding sources named above.

  • SCL 6035 Strategic Planning and Management


    3 Hours

    This course helps students to develop an understanding of strategic planning and management, to know the ethical implications of the process, and to be able to apply the process by developing a strategic plan for an organization. 
  
  • SCL 6110 Foundations of Strategic Communication


    3 Hours

    This course explores how individuals and organizations use purposeful communication to achieve strategic goals. It offers an overview of the principles, history, and theoretical concepts that guide strategic communication and considers its effective practice in a variety of individual and organizational contexts. 
  
  • SCL 6120 Foundations of Leadership


    3 Hours

    This course explores examines leadership history, theories, and processes, as well as opportunities and challenges presented to the 21st century leader. Students will reflect on their strengths and weaknesses as leaders, and consider the types of leaders they want to be. In short, a goal of this course is to equip students to understand leadership in depth and practice it effectively for life. 
  
  • SCL 6210 Applied Research in Practice


    3 Hours

    This course examines the role and techniques of applied research in strategic communication. Using both the qualitative and quantitative research traditions, the course guides students in how to use primary and secondary research to drive organizational processes, make data-driven decision, and anticipate and solve organizational issues. 
  
  • SCL 6310 Value-Aligned Communication & Leadership


    3 Hours

    This course explores the intersections of values, communication, and leadership. Importantly, it considers the role of values, ethics, social responsibility, and courage in critical leadership competencies (e.g., decision making, change, developing others). It will equip students with frameworks and perspectives necessary for reflecting on and refining their own behavior and leadership skills in light of ongoing challenges to organizing and leading in the 21st century. 
  
  • SCL 6410 Human Dynamics


    3 Hours

    This course examines the multidimensional elements of human communication within organizations. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal and group dynamics, verbal and nonverbal communication, diversity and culture, and the importance of communication in engaging members of the organization. 
  
  • SCL 6420 Organizational Culture


    3 Hours

    This course examines the development, nature, classifications, and characteristics of organizational culture. Emphasis is placed on how communication is used to create, manage, and lead others within an organization’s unique culture. 
  
  • SCL 6430 Strategic Planning and Management


    3 Hours

    This course helps students to develop an understanding of strategic planning and management, to know the ethical implications of the process, and to be able to apply the process by developing a strategic plan for an organization. 
  
  • SCL 6440 Communication and Change


    3 Hours

    This course examines the critical elements required to be a successful leader of change. Emphasis is placed on the application of communication and change theories for analyzing, managing, and leading change in organizations of all types. 
  
  • SCL 6450 Branding and Influence


    3 Hours

    This course explores the relationship of branding to influence. Emphasis is placed on the development of one’s personal brand to leverage strategic communication platforms to lead conversations on critical topics to support one’s mission and vision. Branding principles and practices will be extended to the organizational context. 
  
  • SCL 6460 Training and Development


    3 Hours

    This interactive and application-based course is designed to enhance students’ understanding of and experience with the design, development, presentation, and evaluation of organizational training programs. This course will build students’ capacity to create and deliver a training program that can be adapted to an implemented in an organization. 
  
  • SCL 6470 Organizational Consulting


    3 Hours

    This course acquaints students with significant issues pe1iaining to the design, implementation, and assessment of consulting projects. It introduces consulting and the design and implementation of 
    consulting in various settings and industries. Students learn how to effectively gather data and use their findings to offer theory-grounded recommendations to a client. In addition, they learn how effective 
    communication helps to successfully manage client relationships. Finally, this class prepares students to address ethical issues that are connected with consulting work. 
  
  • SCL 6510 Foundations of Nonprofits


    3 Hours

    This course fosters an understanding of nonprofit organizations and the nonprofit section Emphasis is placed on the history of nonprofits, essential vocabulary and concepts, organizational structures, the role of the staff and board, legal and compliance issues, the role of nonprofits in a democracy, basic current issues, and the social, legal and moral implications of being a nonprofit. 
  
  • SCL 6520 Governance in Nonprofits


    3 Hours

    This course examines the principles and practices of effective governance along with current trends and developments in the governance of nonprofit organizations. Emphasis is placed on board selection and management, governance leadership structures, legal duties, relationship to the executive director and the staff, and its role in securing the future of the organization it governs. 
  
  • SCL 6530 Fundraising for Nonprofits


    3 Hours

    This course examines current trends in fundraising and financial sustainability in the nonprofit sector. Emphasis is placed on major gifts, foundation and corporate relations, board engagement, community-based support and the development and implementation of fundraising planning. 
  
  • SCL 6540 People Management in Nonprofits


    3 Hours

    This course explores the challenges of managing the array of people necessary for a nonprofit to succeed, including employees and volunteers. Emphasis is placed on recruitment, 
    on boarding, training, evaluation, and development of individuals and groups. 
  
  • SCL 6895 Special Topics


    3 Hours

    Seminars on trends and issues relevant to strategic communication and leadership may be offered as elective options. Topics will vary and students may repeat this course with different topics. 
  
  • SCL 6990 Independent Study


    3 Hours

    This course allows students to work with an individual faculty member to explore in depth a topic related to strategic communication and leadership. 
  
  • SCL 6994 Thesis Directed Study


    3 Hours

    This course is designed for students who have chosen the thesis option for their capstone project. Students will work with an individual faculty member to focus their topic, review the literature, develop research questions, determine research methodology, and seek approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). 
  
  • SCL 6995 Thesis


    3 Hours

    This course is the culminating experience for the M.S. in Strategic Communication & Leadership program. While enrolled in this course, students will complete a thesis project with original research under the supervision of a faculty mentor. This course will be graded as pass/fail based upon the student’s completion of the project.
  
  • SCL 6997 Capstone Project


    3 Hours

    This course is the culminating experience for the M.S. in Strategic Communication & Leadership program. While enrolled in this course, students will complete a research-based special project or thesis under the supervision of a faculty mentor. This course will be graded as pass/fail based upon the student’s completion of the project.
  
  • SCL 6999 Capstone/Thesis Continuation


    1 Hours

    This course is required to maintain enrollment at Belmont when the student fails to complete SCL 6995 and 6997 in one semester. Enrollment in SCL 6999 is required each semester beyond the original term the student enrolled in SCL 6995 and 6997. This course will be graded as pass/fail based upon the student’s progress, but there will be no impact on the student’s GPA. Students may enroll in SCL 6999 a maximum of two (2) semester or one year. Credit hours earned by SCL 6999 do not count toward the requirement for graduation.
